Transition Security as Part of Responsible Restructuring

Workforce restructuring can be carried out responsibly — with care for people, society, and the company’s obligations — while also managing potential retirement risks and the responsibilities that come with being someone’s last employer.

Redundancy negotiations — commonly known in Finland as YT negotiations — are a formal process between employer and employees, designed to ensure that staff have a genuine opportunity to influence their working conditions and any potential redundancies.

These negotiations are required whenever an employer is considering business-driven measures that would affect the position of one or more employees.

Our services meet the statutory requirements for transition security, supporting your organisation through change — from identifying the need for restructuring, through planning, to implementing the desired outcome. Handled with care and responsibility, workforce transitions also help protect and maintain your reputation as an employer.

Statutory Transition Security

Following a legislative change in 2017, companies employing more than 30 people are required by law to provide transition security support to employees who are made redundant for financial or production-related reasons, and who have been with the company for more than five years.

Transition security refers to coaching and training designed to help those facing redundancy find new employment more quickly. The support package — roughly equivalent in value to one month’s salary — is for many employees a meaningful boost to their prospects in the job market.

At the same time, providing this support sends a clear message: that your organisation is one that genuinely cares about its people and takes its responsibilities seriously — strengthening your reputation as a considerate and accountable employer.

What to Consider When Restructuring Responsibly?

  • Clear and effective communication
  • Employment legislation and situation-specific needs
  • Strong collaboration between management, employee representatives, HR, and your transition support partner
  • Adequate support for employees with partial work capacity
  • Stabilising and settling the renewed organisation

How Do We Do It?

A modern and responsible organisation takes care of its employees even when employment must come to an end. With the right transition support partner, organisations can ensure that those made redundant find sustainable employment solutions quickly and effectively.

The best outcomes are achieved when a transition support partner is brought in as early as possible. This sends a clear signal to employee representatives that, should restructuring lead to redundancies, the future of those affected will be looked after to the best of the organisation’s ability. This is particularly important when those facing redundancy include employees with partial work capacity.

Our long-standing partnerships with Finland’s leading work pension and occupational accident insurance companies have allowed us to develop high-quality, effective processes for supporting the employment of people with partial work capacity. This expertise also enables us to help organisations manage potential pension-related risks.

All of our service packages are built around the specific needs of each client organisation. The same tailored approach extends to our personal coaching sessions, where each individual facing redundancy is supported in building a new career path — whether that means direct re-employment, further education, or entrepreneurship.

Our coaches are highly educated professionals with up-to-date expertise in career coaching and a strong understanding of regional labour markets. The coaching process is further supported by a digital learning platform, enabling individuals to develop their job-seeking skills between sessions.

Where needed, dedicated support for the restructured organisation can be added to the service package. Our Re-teaming coaching programme is designed to help the renewed team navigate and adapt to change as smoothly as possible — improving the wellbeing of those who remain and keeping the organisation running effectively.

Managers and team leaders play a central role in supporting employee wellbeing and resilience through periods of change. For this reason, Re-teaming coaching is often combined with leadership training, helping organisations strengthen their capabilities in workplace wellbeing management and people leadership.
